We are a group of hospital based midwives and consultant obstetricians who run independent antenatal workshops in the Nottingham area. We pride ourselves on an honest and realistic approach that supports women to trust their ability and aim for a positive birth experience. We recognise the important role of the birth partner and aim to highlight their role and how they impact on the birth experience.
As midwives (and mothers!) we are passionate about our role. All the midwives and obstetricians who take part in the workshops are employed in the hospital environment providing antenatal, labour and postnatal care on a daily basis. Our professional and personal experiences have led us to recognise that women who have received antenatal education are more likely to have a natural birth and less likely to have complications. All midwives teaching on our workshops are regulated by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and are members of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM). Obstetricians teaching are regulated by the General Medical Council and are members of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG). Continual personal and professional development is paramount in maintaining our professional competencies. Courses attended have widened our knowledge on how best to support women. These include:
The Nursing and Midwifery Council is an organisation set up by Parliament to protect the public by ensuring that nurses and midwives provide high standards of care to their patients and clients.
To achieve its aims, the NMC:
The General Medical Council (GMC) registers doctors to practise medicine in the UK. Our purpose is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine.
At Instructions Not Included we offer a multidisciplinary approach that will empower you to make informed choices during your birth experience and early parenthood. Our workshops run on an evening, weekend and individual session basis We believe the optimum time for commencement of courses is after 28 weeks of pregnancy. Due to a limited number of places and high demand workshops get booked up quickly. It is advisable to book early on in your pregnacy to ensure a place.
Due to the high demand for places we no longer advertise available dates.
Weekend courses run 3 times per month and evening classes are held on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, depending on the demand.
We will endevour to allocate individuals to the type of course requested on dates that correspond with the gestation and due date of the baby.
It is advisable to highlight on the registration form weeks that are unsuitable
Workshops last for 2 hours (7pm-9pm) with refreshments and comfort breaks (a necessity for all pregnant women!)
Each workshop will have a maximum of 10 couples per class. Our experience demonstrates that this class size enables us to be flexible, aiming to cover core topics but also give individuals an opportunity to discuss anything they feel is important or need clarity on.

£195 per couple or individual accompanied by birthing partner. Lunch included. Refreshments included.
The midwife will arrange a session at a time and place to suite you.
This is ideal for couples that are unable to attend a course or prefer a more personalised or confidential approach. Tailored to your own individual requirements, this session aims to cover key areas and answer specific questions you may have. A midwife will contact you to establish your individual needs from the session. She will then work with you to formulate a plan for the session, date, location and time.
We recommend that individual workshops commence after 34 weeks of pregnancy.
£130 per 2 hour session
Having more than one baby does not mean that the workshops do not reflect your needs. Using a multidisciplinary approach with flexibility we are able to tailor the workshops around the groups needs. If we have an increased number of women booked who are all expecting more than one baby we will contact them personally and offer them the opportunity to transfer to a course for twins and higher multiples. The course content will remain the same however we recognise the invaluable opportunity to network with others in the same situation as you.
